To choose a lithium-ion cell supplier, check five things: where the cells are made and whether the supplier is authorised to sell them, the cell grade, whether full test data backs the datasheet, whether batches are matched and consistent across orders, and what technical support and samples are available before you commit to volume.
Why supplier choice matters as much as cell choice
Choosing the right cell is only part of the process. The supplier you buy from can affect the consistency, performance and reliability of the cells you receive.
Even the same cell model can vary if cells are poorly stored, incorrectly graded or supplied from inconsistent batches. That can lead to problems during pack assembly, including mismatched performance and unexpected production issues.
For engineers and procurement teams, checking the supplier before placing a larger order can reduce these risks.
The five things to check
Cell origin and authorisation
A reputable lithium-ion cell supplier should be able to tell you who manufactured the cells and where they came from. Ask whether they are an authorised distributor or sourcing through another route.
Cell grade
Don’t assume that every cell described as “Grade A” meets the same standard. Ask what the supplier means by the grade and how cells are assessed before being supplied.
Test data
Ask for the manufacturer’s datasheet and supporting test information. Depending on the application, this may include capacity, internal resistance and cycle life.
You should also ask which tests the cells have passed and request the reports where appropriate. .
Batch matching and consistency
Cells used together in a battery pack need to be suitably matched. Differences in capacity and internal resistance can affect pack performance and balancing.
Ask whether cells are tested and sorted before supply, and whether repeat orders can be matched to previous batches.
Support, samples and MOQs
A good supplier should be able to help you assess whether a cell is suitable for your application before you commit to volume. Ask about sample availability, minimum order quantities and realistic lead times.
Red flags to walk away from
Be cautious if a supplier:
- Offers prices well below the expected market rate
- Gives vague answers about cell origin
- Provides datasheets but no supporting test data
- Pressures you to order volume before sampling
- Won’t confirm specifications in writing
- Has no clear process for handling out-of-specification batches
