How long do rechargeable batteries last with proper care?

All batteries will deteriorate over time. Rechargeable batteries self-discharge, and do so at different rates dependent on the chemistry of the battery.

The lithium-ion battery works on ion movement between the positive and negative electrodes. In theory such a mechanism should work forever, but cycling, elevated temperature and aging decrease the performance over time.


Understanding the Charge Cycle and Capacity Degradation

Similar to a mechanical device that wears out faster with heavy use, so also does the depth of discharge (DoD) determine the cycle count. The shorter the discharge (low DoD), the longer the battery will last.

If at all possible, avoid full discharges and charge the battery more often between uses. Partial discharge on Li-ion is fine; there is no memory and the battery does not need periodic full discharge cycles to prolong life. A partial discharge reduces stress and prolongs battery life. Elevated temperature and high currents also adversely affect cycle life. Elevated temperature hastens capacity loss, and the capacity cannot be restored.


Maximizing the Lifespan of

your Li-ion Battery

Manufacturers take a conservative approach and specify the life of most Li-ion between 300 and 500 discharge/charge cycles. However, at the end of this measure, the batteries will still have 80% of their original capacity, and can continue to be used.

A battery may fail within this measure due to heavy use or unfavourable temperature conditions, but most quality batteries will last considerably longer than this, albeit at reducing capacity.
